453142369Water is our greatest ally. Our bodies depend on it, are composed of it, and use it for many necessary biochemical and enzymatic reactions and pathways. It is the medium to flush toxins from our system (consider that many people get headaches if they are dehydrated). Water is as integral to our bodies as it is to our planet.

The single most beneficial thing you can do to promote health is to drink adequate water. A general rule of thumb is to drink half the number of pounds you weigh in ounces. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds you would drink 60 ounces of water per day. This means water, not tea or coffee. It is also good to keep in mind that some beverages such as coffee and beer are diuretics so it is good to drink even more water if you indulge in them. A simple way to insure you get enough water is to fill a quart jar in the morning and know that you need to drink 2 or 3 of those jars by bedtime. ( 32 ounces equals one quart of water….)

  1. 90% of the time I find myself sick with a cold or flu all I need to do is think back on how much water I had been drinking before I became sick, usually it’ll turn out to be about half the amount I should have been drinking.

    • Thank you for the reply, Andrea. I’m sure that is not what most people consider when they feel a cold or flu coming on, but you’re right that being under-hydrated leaves us susceptible to challenging stimuli.

Viruses are opportunistic. In and of themselves they do not create a problem. Consider when the latest cold or flu sweeps through, many do not succumb. Viruses thrive in body tissues that are sluggish, toxin ridden, or have an altered pH. Proper hydration of our body directly addresses these factors.

Does anyone else have stories about water intake and their health?
