To boost the health and healing qualities of your smoothies, try adding a couple handfuls of spinach. You will hardly, if at all, know it is there yet the vitamin and phytonutrient content of your smoothie will dramatically increase.
Here is my simple, yummy and very healthy breakfast smoothie. I drink it every morning. Don’t let the simplicity fool you. Even with just 3 ingredients it is packed with nutrients, and of course you can add whatever else you like to it, such as hemp, flax or chia seeds. I’ve listed the nutrient values of the smoothie ingredients at the bottom.
– 1-2 cups wild* frozen blueberries
– 1-2 ripe bananas, depending on how sweet you want your smoothie
– 2 handfuls of spinach
– Water, if needed
*make sure to get wild, not cultivated blueberries, as the nutrient make-up is very different. You can find them in the freezer section of many stores, such as Trader Joe’s (the least expensive organic wild blueberries I have found), Safeway and Costco (Wyman’s Brand), Whole Foods, etc. Make sure they come from the east coast of the US or Canada.
