I’m Dr. Carolee with Quantum Techniques. Today I would like to say a few words about staying positive, because I feel like that staying positive is a learned art. It takes effort. A lot of us, especially those of us that are just coming out of anxiety, have what we call the ‘what if’ factor. We tend to have this negative thinking pattern that says “What if it won’t work? What if somebody botches it up for me? What if I can’t control something?”
It’s important to focus on the positive and assume the best. Catch yourself when things go negative and turn it around. Think something like, “I’m fine, this is working,” or “I feel grateful for whatever comes to mind.”
There’s also a breathing exercise that you can do that helps you to get back into that positive mode. Put your hand just over your navel and breathe all the way down into that hand. You’re doing some deep abdominal breathing. Then arrange your facial muscles into a smile, because that activates the serotonin and the dopamine in the brain that says, “I’m okay. Everything is fine.” You just breathe. You’ll feel yourself start to relax and the feel good factor starts to rise up and you start to feel better. It only takes about 90 seconds for that sense of well-being to really kick in and for you to feel like you’re okay. This makes it a lot easier to stay positive.
Remember it’s a habit to be negative. You find yourself saying something negative to yourself or in your head, your self-talk; catch it and make it a habit of thinking positive. “What’s the good in it? What can I find in this situation to be happy about?” Practice being a Pollyanna so that you can find the good in any situation. It really does help in your healing to stay on the positive side of things.
Many people get on their healing journey and they still have that habit of being negative. They get on the phone and say, “I can’t be happy now because this happened in the past.” Even though we’ve cleared the trauma, they still allow the past to define them. They don’t need to. They can live right now in the present moment and say, “What am I grateful for right now? Why can I be happy right now?”
Things in the past aren’t happening anymore – it was a difficult time and things needed to be cleared and worked through, but it’s done and we need to live in the present now. Think “What can I do good today? Why can I be happy today? What am I grateful for now?” Make that your new habit because it will help you so much in your healing.
