Cortisol and adrenaline are produced as a back-up source of energy for the brain. These stress hormones keep you awake. Your body needs cortisol levels to be low in order to fall asleep.
Salt decreases the stress hormone (cortisol and adrenaline) levels as well and decreases the secretion of them into the blood stream. Cortisol spikes can wake you up in the wee hours of the morning.
